South Cambs is fortunate to have some of the most beautiful chalk streams in the world. But just this week, our Conservative MP blocked a new law which would have clamped down on water firms that are dumping sewage into them. Like many of you, Pippa took the news personally.
Pippa is heartbroken to see the state of our chalk streams. Raw sewage continues to be dumped into these rare, precious waterways. Wildlife is dying from pollution and residents dare not let their children or dogs paddle or play in them. Monitoring data gathered by local people that care passionately about the state of our rivers has shown worrying levels of faecal bacteria in the water.
The good news is that there are ways to help clean up our rivers if we all work together. Pippa has met with Cam Valley Forum campaigners, with local river action groups, with chalk stream specialists and with local river users. All are supportive of the need to get a special designation for our river. This would oblige the Environment Agency to test the water regularly for faecal bacteria and require Anglian Water to invest in the improvements needed to clean up their act. Pippa met with the water company and this is something they are willing to consider. She is now working together with South Cambs District Council which is taking important steps after her motion to Stop Sewage Dumping was adopted last year.
Enough is enough! Join Pippa and the Lib Dems in calling on the water companies to clean up their act. The Conservatives are letting them get away with it and want taxpayers to pay to fix the problem. It's time for a 16% sewage tax on their £2.2 billion annual profits to improve our sewage system and protect our streams. And a ban on bonuses for water company executives until sewage discharges stop. Locally, join Pippa’s call on Anglian Water to stop dumping raw sewage in our rivers and to work with our Clean Up our Rivers campaign to get a special designation for our chalk streams.
