Government U-turn a "farce", says South Cambs MP Pippa Heylings

Pippa Heylings, the Liberal Democrat MP for South Cambridgeshire, has condemned the government's chaotic postponement of local government reorganisation, warning it will damage the local economy, create needless insecurity for council staff, and show total disregard for the electorate.

The government announced today that plans for reorganisation across 14 areas, including Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, would be paused and reviewed just weeks before councils and residents had expected clarity on the future shape of local government.

Councils across Cambridgeshire have spent months preparing for reorganisation in good faith, with staff, budgets and services all geared towards the process. Local businesses have also been factoring the changes into their own planning. The sudden pause, announced with minimal notice, leaves all of this hanging in the balance with no clear timeline for when or how a decision will finally be made.

Liberal Democrat MP for South Cambridgeshire Pippa Heylings expressed her frustration, saying:

"This is an utter farce. Councils, businesses and residents across Cambridgeshire have been in limbo awaiting a final decision, and now, with barely any warning, the government has pulled the rug out from under the entire process. Once again, it's South Cambridgeshire's communities paying the price for Labour's chaos and incompetence.

"Businesses need certainty to invest and plan. This shambolic delay and then reversal puts that at risk right when our local economy can least afford it.

"This is also a profound disrespect to the electorate, who were promised a clear and honest process and instead got confusion and yet another U-turn.

"It is also unfair to put council staff through this. Thousands of people have been living with the uncertainty of reorganisation hanging over their jobs and their families' futures, and now they're being told to wait even longer with no timeline and even less clarity.

"Angela Rayner set this whole thing in motion, and now she's questioning the robustness and legality of her own process. This chaos is hers to own. Andy Burnham promised that his government would do politics differently, but this just shows that it is a continuity of Starmer's chaos and incompetence."
