South Cambs shows Climate Emergency Film
This evening (06 October 2026), Lib Dem run South Cambridgeshire District Council opened its doors at its Headquarters in Cambourne for a showing of the “People’s Emergency Briefing” - a documentary film highlighting the impending consequences of Climate Change.
The event was followed by a discussion between attendees, led by the local wildlife trust, on the choices we all can make to contribute to the fight against man-made climate change.
Introducing the film, Lead Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Laurence Damary-Homan (Lib Dem, Harston and Comberton ward) said: “This film is a raw, real look at the climate and nature emergency we face. We need to be honest about the scale of the challenges ahead if we want to make the changes our planet needs. Local climate action is incredibly powerful and will play a key role in protecting the planet for both ourselves and future generations. Together, we can make a difference. ”
Deputy Leader of the Council, Cllr Brian Milnes (Lib Dem, Sawston ward) said: “I’m genuinely pleased that people are taking the opportunity to inform themselves about the true extent of climate change. It may be a harsh message, but the film shows us there are positive steps we can all take, both as individuals and together as organisations.”
This comes on the back of a number of successful showings across South Cambridgeshire including in Great Wilbraham, Haslingfield, Hauxton, Barrington, Bar Hill, Northstowe, Cottenham, Waterbeach, Impington and Girton.
Further showings are planned locally - including in Thriplow, Histon, Cambourne, Hardwick and Fulbourn.
Local Lib Dems have been driving forward action on climate change, with the District Council recently announcing it has met its interim carbon emission target - cutting over 45% of emissions since 2018/19, when they took control of the Council. The Council’s next target is a 75% reduction in emissions by 2030.
Similarly, today the Council announced that it had given out over £1 million in Zero Carbon Communities Grants - the Council’s flagship environmental grant scheme to help tackle climate change at a hyper-local level - since the Liberal Democrats introduced them in 2019.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Bridget Smith (Lib Dem, Gamlingay ward) said: “In 2018, Liberal Democrats made being ‘Green to our Core’ a priority for South Cambridgeshire District Council and it has been our guiding principle since then. Both nationally and locally, Liberal Democrats have been leading the way in tackling climate change and helping our communities prepare for the effects of it. The climate crisis is not a far off problem, it is affecting our communities and our planet here and now, and we all have a duty to respond to it.
