The True Cost of Labour’s Chaotic Council Shake-Up
The Government’s decision to pause its controversial Local Government Reorganisation plans is costing taxpayers across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough more than £100,000 every month, the Leader of South Cambridgeshire District Council has revealed.
The seven councils across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are collectively submitting a compensation claim to the Government for costs incurred as a result of the LGR process.
Just under £1 million was spent between April and September 2026, as councils stepped up preparations for reorganisation. A further £100,000-plus is being incurred every month while the Government’s pause continues.
The figures were revealed following a question from Cllr Anna Bradnam (Lib Dem, Milton and Waterbeach ward) at yesterday’s meeting of Full Council (08 October 2026). Cllr Bradnam asked whether the Government’s pause has wasted officer time and taxpayers’ money, and whether it demonstrated a lack of respect for local democracy.
In addition to outlining the Councils’ compensation claim, Council Leader, Cllr Bridget Smith (Lib Dem, Gamlingay ward) said, “The Government’s sudden pause on Local Government Reorganisation is a blatant disregard for local democracy and a staggering waste of taxpayers’ money. It sadly continues a trend of Labour and Conservative Governments taking local government for granted and not thinking through the real world consequences of their actions. [...]
“Whether people agree with reorganisation or not, we can all agree that ongoing uncertainty helps nobody. It’s clear that what the government is doing isn’t genuine devolution or ‘rewiring the state’ - it is a costly, chaotic distraction that treats local government and residents with contempt. Despite this central government dysfunction, our position is unchanged - we will protect local services and ensure our residents do not suffer from Whitehall's indecision.”
